Weekends Were Hard                                                                           ~ James P. Wagner (Ishwa)

Weekends were hard
When he couldn’t get a free room
At the casino hotel
Like he could on the weekdays
He went on poker binges
Saturday and Sunday
Thirty-six hour sessions
If he had the stamina
Sometimes sleeping in his clunker
In the parking garage
The reward points from the long sessions
Providing free meals
Most people at the table
Had no idea
He did three tours
In the sandbox
And this was all he had
To come home to.

Both tender and poignant and a sober reminder of the human cost of war

Reminds me of Sam Stone. The empty door. Picture cards for life.

A lonely road of sleeping alone and free supper...sad...

James, I see that you are involved in many poetry events. Nice poetry ! I am trying to find out what happened to the poetry books I ordered from Local Gems from summer in the 49 Haiku challege. Have sent numerous e-mails.
Waiting for Haiku
to arrive on my doorstep
Need a smile in winter!
Can you please either retrun my money or send the books...please! Sherri

He must have been lucky
Dodging bullets and IEDs
At least that's what he told himself
Rolled them bones three times
Never felt the pain of snake eyes
There are no mirrors on the green velvet
